This book is a good first effort by a debut author. Unfortunately, it failed to grab my interest and I had a hard time relating to the characters. When I first started reading I wondered what was going on as Ben did not sound like the description of the main male character in the book. Once Nikolas was introduced, I wondered what the author was trying to convey with the initial events with Ben. It seemed superfluous and unnecessary to me, but I am sure there was some intent behind the interest the two of them had in each other. I just failed to grasp what that was.
At times the pacing was slow, and other times it felt to me like too many things were going on for me to have an understanding of where the book was going. In order for me to really enjoy a book, there needs to be a seamless transition from one event to another, and I found many of the scenes to be choppy and occasionally awkward. Additionally, there are some grammar and punctuation issues, such as commas where there should be periods, incomplete sentences and mixed tenses. If these are not things that bother you when reading, then it will surely not detract from your enjoyment of the story. Often I had to go back and re-read a passage for it to make sense to me. However, that’s just me. I am sure others will have no trouble following along.
I don’t want to discourage anyone from reading this book. I can see where many people would enjoy the plot and the story line. Sadly, it just was not for me.
